7 Days in Kosovo – The Youngest Country in Europe

The route that gives Kosovo its complete argument: two days in Pristina for the NEWBORN monument (the word “NEWBORN” in capital letters at 3 metres high, the monument that appeared on February 17, 2008 — Kosovo’s declaration of independence day — and that the city re-paints annually with a different message, the specific Kosovo national identity visible in the monument that is also the public art installation), the Bazaar area (the 15th-century Ottoman bazaar, the xhami and the hamam visible in the Çarshia e Madhe — the Great Bazaar), and the Ethnological Museum, two days at the Rugova Canyon (the 30km canyon above Peja — the canyon walls at 400 metres, the walking trails, the specific Kosovo mountain landscape that the Albanian Alps above give as the background), and three days in the south for the Decani Monastery (the UNESCO 14th-century monastery — the largest medieval church in the Balkans, the frescoes in the specific Byzantine style covering 2,000 square metres of wall and ceiling) and the Šar Mountain ski resort and the specific Kosovo that the international news coverage has not shown since 2008.

Before You Leave

The context: Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. The declaration is recognised by 101 UN member states including the UK, the US, and the EU majority. Serbia, Russia, China, and approximately 90 other countries do not recognise the independence. The Kosovo passport is not universally accepted; the UK passport gives visa-free entry.

Getting there: Fly London-Pristina (Wizz Air, British Airways seasonal, Eurowings — from £40 one way, 2.5 hours). Alternatively, fly London-Tirana and drive north (3 hours) or fly London-Belgrade and drive south (3.5 hours — note: Kosovo and Serbia have a complex border relationship; verify the current crossing status at the FCDO travel advice page before the Serbia-Kosovo land crossing).

Currency: Euro — Kosovo adopted the Euro without EU membership (the same unilateral adoption as Montenegro). 1 GBP ≈ €1.19 (2025 rate).

The FCDO advisory: Kosovo is rated “Exercise Normal Caution” by the FCDO as of 2025 — the same category as France and Germany. The specific FCDO caution concerns the northern Kosovo (the municipalities bordering Serbia where the political situation remains sensitive). The circuit in this guide avoids the northern municipalities.

The Route

Pristina (2 nights) → Peja and the Rugova Canyon (2 nights) → Prizren and Decani (3 nights)

DAYS 1-2 — Pristina

The NEWBORN Monument:

The NEWBORN (the monument on Nënë Tereza Boulevard — the yellow letters, each 3 metres tall, the monument that appeared overnight on February 17, 2008 (the independence declaration date) and that the municipality has repainted annually since with the message that captures the year’s specific Kosovo narrative):

The 2024 repainting: a different message each year; check the current state before visiting. The monument is simultaneously the public art, the national symbol, and the specific Kosovo document of the country in the act of becoming.

The Bazaar and the Grand Mosque:

The Çarshia e Madhe (the 15th-century Ottoman bazaar — the copper craftsmen visible in the hanxheret (the craft workshops), the Gran Hamam (the largest Ottoman bathhouse in Kosovo, built in the 15th century, the renovation in progress through 2022 with the specific preservation intent)):

The Grand Mosque of Pristina (the Xhamia e Çarshisë — the 15th-century mosque at the bazaar centre): free entry outside prayer times.

The Kosovo Museum:

The Kosovo Museum (the national museum covering the prehistory through the Ottoman and the Yugoslav periods to the independence):

Entry: €3 / £2.52.

DAYS 3-4 — Peja and the Rugova Canyon

The Rugova Canyon:

The Rugova Gorge (the canyon above Peja — the 30km canyon through the Bjeshkët e Nemuna (the “Accursed Mountains”), the canyon walls visible from the road at 400 metres, the Lumbardhi River at the canyon floor):

The hiking trail (the Via Dinarica hiking trail passes through the Rugova — the multi-day trail connecting Slovenia to Albania through the Western Balkans mountains, the specific Rugova section (1 day) giving the canyon and the mountain simultaneously):

The Visoki Dečani Monastery:

The Visoki Dečani Monastery (the UNESCO monastery 15km south of Peja — the 14th-century Serbian Orthodox monastery, the largest medieval church in the Balkans (the church nave at 29 metres wide and 28 metres tall), the 2,000 square metres of Byzantine frescoes in the specific 14th-century style that the art historians consider the finest surviving medieval fresco cycle in the Western Balkans):

Entry: free. Photography inside the church: not permitted. The Serbian Orthodox monks are in residence — the monastery is a functioning religious community, not a heritage site. The appropriate visitor behaviour: the quiet presence, the respectful observation.

DAYS 5-7 — Prizren

The Prizren old city:

The Prizren (the second city — the specific Kosovo Ottoman heritage most concentrated in the Prizren old city, the Sinan Pasha Mosque (the 16th-century mosque, the largest in Kosovo), the Gazi Mehmet Pasha Hamam (the 15th-century bathhouse, restored, the specific Ottoman spa experience):

The Prizren Fortress (the 11th-century Byzantine-Serbian-Ottoman fortress above the city — the Drin River visible from the fortress wall, the Prizren old city roofscape visible below, the specific Kosovo fortress that the military history has not obscured with the tourist infrastructure):

Free.

The Prizren League Building:

The Prizren League (the 1878 Albanian national movement, the League of Prizren — the political movement that emerged from this specific city in this specific building to advocate for Albanian autonomy within the Ottoman Empire, the specific Kosovo political history at the founding moment of Albanian national identity):

The building (the museum covering the League’s history): entry €2 / £1.68.
